The Slough Arm - at last!

Jenny is certainly no poet laureate but she has tried!

The Slough Arm

Most boaters say, “Why bother?”
But we just thought why not!?!
So down the Arm we ventured,
An experience is what we got!

Although the first bit was shallow,
It is very pretty indeed.
Through the crystal clear water
We spied fishes and terrible weed!

Sid said, “Look, there’s a terrapin
And then we saw some coots
And moorhen, swans and ducks galore
And also some rotten old boots!

Walkers, cyclists and anglers too,
Along the towpath we passed by.
We nodded and waved with a cheery “hello”
As we motored along beneath a bright blue sky.

Purple buddleia and yellow flags,
Sweet roses and poppies tall and red.
Water lilies, honeysuckle and blossom abound
With the aromas of curry and baking bread all around.

We saw aeroplanes, houses, office and cars,
Factories, dredgers and water aerators, (sorry!)
We heard birdsong and laughter and the sighing of trees,
And the sound of the motorway carried on the breeze.

There were bunnies and butterflies and workmen at rest,
The dragonflies and damselflies abundant and best.
And then, as we neared the end of the Arm
The rubbish and debris caused us some alarm!

Plastic bags in the water of all shapes and sizes,
Beer bottles and cans and an old shopping trolley,
Old footballs and clothing and spent bottles of Tizers!
Containers and cartons and that old broken brolley!

However, as we came to the end of our venture
We decided it really had been an interesting day,
So next time we hear, “it is not worth the bother”,
We’ll ignore that and just carry on in our own way.

And one more reason for us the go down this arm is because Slough is where Janice was born!

Crystal clear waters! And plastic bags

Forgotten Wharf!

The neglected terminus of the Slough Arm!
